Passport and travel essentials laid out on a wooden table

Suriname isn’t a complicated destination, but it does take more planning than Spain. This guide covers the four things to sort before departure: flights, visa, vaccinations, and currency.

Booking flights

Two direct connections from Europe to Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (PBM):

  • KLM from Amsterdam — daily direct, around 9 hours.
  • Surinaamse Luchtvaart Maatschappij (SLM) from Amsterdam — comparable route, sometimes cheaper, often via Curaçao.

Visa and paperwork

Since 2025 Suriname uses an e-Visa or digital tourist card. For most EU passports:

  1. Apply online via consulaatsuriname.nl
  2. Allow 5–10 working days
  3. Tourist card: ~25 EUR for 90 days
  4. Print the confirmation — show it on departure and arrival

Also needed: passport valid for 6 months past your return date, return ticket, and a stay address for your first night (a hotel works).

Vaccinations

Standard travel-clinic overview (always verify with your local travel doctor):

VaccinationStatusWhen to arrange
DTPRecommended4 weeks before departure
Hepatitis ARecommended2 weeks before departure
Yellow feverRequired if transiting endemic countryMin. 10 days before departure
TyphoidRecommended for longer trips1 week before departure
Malaria prophylaxisOnly for interior travelStart 1 week before departure

Plan your travel-clinic appointment at least 6 weeks before departure. Yellow fever is the bottleneck — shorter notice is possible but stressful.

Currency

The currency is the Surinamese Dollar (SRD). The rate is volatile, check before departure.

  • Card payments: work in Paramaribo at major banks (DSB, Hakrinbank). Expect high transaction fees from your home bank — some travelers prefer cash.
  • Cash exchange: USD has the best rate. Exchange at a Cambio in town, not at the airport.
  • Credit cards: only at hotels and larger restaurants. Don’t count on Visa/Mastercard outside Paramaribo.

What else to arrange

  • Travel insurance with medical cover for Latin America
  • Adapter: Suriname uses Type C and F (same as the EU) — no adapter needed
  • eSIM or local SIM: Telesur and Digicel sell prepaid cards at the airport, around SRD 100 for 5GB

What it costs (full first trip)

A realistic budget for 2 weeks in Suriname with one interior trip:

Vaccinations (first time)€150–250
14 nights stay€600–1400

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Suriname?
Most EU passports use the e-Visa or tourist card system since 2025 for stays up to 90 days. Apply at least two weeks before departure via consulaatsuriname.nl.
Which vaccinations are required?
Yellow fever is required if you transit through an endemic country. DTP, hepatitis A, and typhoid are strongly recommended. Malaria prophylaxis only for interior travel (Brokopondo, Sipaliwini).
How much cash should I bring?
Plan for 100–200 USD in small bills for interior travel (guides, lodges, small markets). Card payments work fine in Paramaribo, but outside the city cash is king.
Is tap water drinkable?
Generally yes in Paramaribo, but many travelers stick with filtered or bottled water to be safe. In the interior: always filter or boil.
