What makes Suriname special

Nature & rainforest

Eighty percent rainforest, the Marowijne river, Brownsberg, and the Central Suriname Reserve — one of the largest untouched tropical forests on earth.

Culture & history

Paramaribo’s UNESCO old town, Maroon and Indigenous communities, colonial plantations, and a kitchen flavored by three continents.

Adventure

Dugout into the interior, hammock-sleep above the jungle, spot dolphins at Bigi Pan, and watch turtles by starlight at Galibi.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we get most about travel in Suriname.

When is the best time to visit Suriname?
February–March and August–November are driest and most comfortable. Avoid May–July due to the major wet season.
Is Suriname safe for travelers?
Suriname is generally safe for tourists. Apply standard travel sense in Paramaribo and book interior trips through a local guide.
How much does an average trip cost?
Plan on €2,000 to €3,700 for two weeks including flight, an interior trip, and accommodation. Our practical guide has a full budget.
What's the official language?
Dutch is the official language. Sranan Tongo is widely spoken, as are Sarnami, Javanese, and Indigenous and Maroon community languages.
Do I really need a local guide?
For the interior: yes. For Paramaribo and immediate surroundings, you're fine on your own. Local guides also matter because they bring income to villages that otherwise see few visitors.
